Emergency Medicine Residency Program
The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at UC San Diego Medical Center began in 1990 with four residents. We now recruit for nine residents per year for a four-year period and total of 36 residents.
The program is highly competitive and receives an average of 400 applications per year for the nine positions. The residency is directed towards producing future academicians in Emergency Medicine and, as such, places a heavy emphasis on academic pursuits. All trainees must complete and write up an independent research project, prepare a select numbers of abstracts from the literature, and participate as an editor of the Journal of Emergency Medicine, which is based at UC San Diego. Approximately one-third of our graduates enter full-time academic positions, one-third enter groups associated with residency training programs with access to academic pursuits, and one-third join community hospital-based private groups.
The four-year program uses the "1-4" configuration. Ours is an integrated residency program involving UCSD Medical Center, Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, Rady Children's Hospital, and Scripps Mercy Hospital.
UCSD Medical Center is the primary training site for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program. UCSD Medical Center is located in the Hillcrest area of San Diego, twelve miles by freeway from the UCSD School of Medicine, its teaching and training center. The clinical complex includes a 466-bed acute care hospital, an Ambulatory Care Center offering 148 specialty and subspecialty clinics and ambulatory facilities, the Family Medicine Center, the Primary Care Center, the Internal Medicine Group Practice, and the Cancer Center. UCSDMC serves a diversified population of inner city and suburban patients, while offering accredited training programs in virtually all of the major medical and surgical specialties.
