Curriculum of the Ultrasound Medicine Fellowship

ultrasound-campbell.jpgThroughout the year, we cover all emergency ultrasound topics. We have a cutting edge education

website providing our curriculum inclusive of both core and advanced ultrasound topics, a robust literature review section, and novel US-based clinical cases. You can visit our website at EMultrasound.ucsd.edu.

We anticipate that we will be EUFAC accredited in 2021 and fellows will be eligible for the Focused Practice Designation exam through ABEM.

Goals

The goals of the UCSD US fellowship are very similar to guidelines put forth by SAEM.

During the fellowship we expect the following of our fellow:

  • A minimum of 800 scans are logged during the fellowship year
  • Two research projects are approved through the IRB and started during the fellowship.
  • Complete one QA project in the department involving ultrasound
  • Give at least three lectures to the Emergency Department in ultrasound.
  • Give at least three ultrasound lectures to medical students rotating in emergency ultrasound and participate in the practical hands-on training of medical students.
  • Complete 2 ultrasound scanning shifts in the department (pediatric or adult, or trauma) per week.
  • The fellow will attend one national meeting during the fellowship.
  • The fellow has the option to sit for RDMS examination upon completion of the ultrasound fellowship

Schedule

Monday mornings are Fellow-led scanning shifts with the rotating medical students and residents. Wednesday mornings are QA, then journal club, followed by Attending-led scanning shifts Wednesday afternoon. These shifts are focused on bedside hands-on teaching of advanced ultrasound applications for the fellow, but medical students and residents participate as well. Additionally, the first Wednesday of each month is our division meeting and Journal club, which is often held on a boat at Kona Kai Marina!
