Curriculum of the Ultrasound Medicine Fellowship
Through journal club, monthly faculty lectures, specialty rotations, teaching opportunities, and funding to attend SCUF and present research at all other major emergency medicine conventions, we provide a comprehensive curriculum covering the entire breadth of emergency ultrasound. This can be reviewed in detail on our alternate website: EMultrasound.ucsd.edu.
Goals
The goals of the UCSD US fellowship are very similar to guidelines put forth by SAEM and ACEP.
During the fellowship we expect the following of our fellow:
-
A minimum of 1000 scans logged during the fellowship year
- At least one research project approved through the IRB and started during the fellowship, or another ongoing study completed and published
- Initiate or complete one QA project in the department involving ultrasound
- Give at least 2-3 ultrasound lectures throughout the year; 1 will be during resident conference to the UCSD emergency department, others will be during QA sessions to medical students and residents rotating in emergency ultrasound, and further opportunities will be available through various regional ultrasound conferences in Southern California
- Complete a total of 8 ultrasound scanning shifts in the department per month, with 2 of those scheduled asynchronously for specialty or advanced applications
- The fellow will attend one national meeting during the fellowship - SCUF will be funded by UCSD US Division funds, with more funding available from UCSD if presenting research
- The fellow will be prepared to sit for and pass the Focused Practice Designation (FPD) -AEMUS certification exam
Schedule
Every other Monday the fellow will lead scanning shifts with the rotating medical students and residents. Wednesday mornings are journal club followed by QA, followed by Attending-led scanning shifts in the afternoon. These shifts are focused on bedside hands-on teaching of advanced ultrasound applications for the fellow, but medical students and residents participate as well.
The fellow will be scheduled for 6 clinical shifts monthly, typically 8 hours each.
We hold a monthly division meeting as well as a quarterly division-wide journal club hosted by one of our US faculty. This is a chance to get to know each other better, build camaraderie, and unwind. Past locations have included downtown during Padres season, or on a boat at Kona Kai Marina!
Schedule requests related to teaching or other administrative duties for the fellow are kept separate from personal requests to allow for adequate work-life balance. Additionally, the fellow will be allotted 4 weeks of paid vacation over the course of the year.
